In this group are several Taft Pierce grinders, all of them in various states of use, and all of them have an optidress with DRO on them. The grinder I chose (Harig 618) does not have an optidress, would it be worth adding an optidress on to my machine?I really am not doing anything super precise or anything in general.
At this point this is still all just a hobby shop, just somewhere to go mess around at night. That being said I do not waht to cut myself short if this ever became more. I do not know that much about these optidress setups, or if they have any real value. I just figured that since I am going to have to take this machine apart to clean and inspect, why not just get an optidress and put it on there. I think I could probably get the entire Taft Pierce machine for a real good deal.
Any thoughts?Having seen them but never used one I have a question. I understand they have optics to see the wheel and that you can use them to match the wheel to a template. But dont they work like a tracer? So you need one template for the optics and another one for the dresser to follow right? CharlesNo they don't work like a tracer, you move the diamond using X and Y slides to position the centreline of a tangent /radius dresser which also coincides with the centreline of the microscope (used to monitor what is going on) pretty clever really.
The one that follows a template is the diaform which I have.To the OP while these wheel forming attachments are cool to have but there isn't much point in having one unless you have a particular need, they used to be worth a fortune but wire EDM has taken a lot of the work that used to be form ground so they are not as desirable as they used to be. That makes sense, I didn't think of the counter weight aspect of the machine mass.I really do not see any need to do any shaped grinding, just flat stuff. I have been looking for a surface grinder for a while at auctions and such. It was just by a stroke of luck that I was able to find the Harig 618 automatic and a bunch of other stuff. The prices are right so why not, if I can get a Taft Pierce for a few dollars more I just may do that as well. I can always take the optidress off and clean it up and sell it, or trade it.Just in case anyone gets tempted by a diaform- be sure to understand what all is necessary to set one up and use it, as far as accessories that should come with it but have often been lost or stripped. The original (Mercer) dial indicator, and set up fingers. The diamond 'protectors', the setting blocks for the diamonds to hold them in the arm.
Whether your model takes the rougher and the finisher blocks. Styluses (stylii?).And a selection of (expensive) shaped chisel diamonds in good (new) condition. Some $200 units on eBay have everything, many don't (Just naming a common price point. The comment often goes double for the higher priced ones.
Few sellers these days know what they are actually selling). If you don't get the parts with the unit, you are condemned pretty much to waiting, watching & buying another that has them. I have several diaforms + accessories, and have never used any of them yet. My original intention was to make involute form tools for gear cutting on the shaper.
